2015-16 Report

The Women’s Second team, better known as the Robins, have enjoyed many successes this year. Training 3 times a week through the winter ensured the team were in a strong shape for the BUCS league. After narrowly missing out on promotion last year in the final match of the season, the Robins were determined to fight to the top of the table.

The team stormed through the matches scheduled in Michaelmas, winning every fixture. By Hilary a close encounter with Birmingham 2s, which Oxford lost 4-2, placed the Robins tied at the top of the table. However, the great performances of the players throughout the matches over both terms ensured Oxford scored top of the table on set difference, proving how every game counts!

The Robins also had a great run in the Midlands Conference Cup this year, sailing through to the semi-final. However it was not to be this year, with old rivals Cambridge knocking the Robins out in a great match which ended 8-4 to the light blues.

An undoubtable highlight of the year for the team was the first Women’s 2nd and Women’s 3rd international tour to Lisbon over the Easter break which was run jointly with the respective men’s teams. Over the 5 day break the teams got the chance to train on clay, play matches and enjoy a bit of team bonding whilst sight-seeing in the city. The trip was a great success and something which the team will continue into the future.

At the end of Trinity term Varsity came around, played on home turf at University Parks. The atmosphere was great and a thoroughly enjoyable weekend, but unfortunately the Robins could not seek revenge against Cambridge this year losing 15-6. Next year will be our year!
