The Men's Third team, known as the Polar Bears, train all year round at Iffley Road Sports Ground. In the winter, they usually have a weekend session on the Iffley hard courts and try to practice with other members of the team throughout the week on various college courts. There is also the BUCS Cup competition for the Polar Bears, which they hope to do well in next year! Due to the strength and depth of OULTC, the Penguins and Polar Bears squads are never fully decided until Trinity Term so there is every opportunity to move up if players show enough potential.

In the academic year 2015-2016 the Men’s Polar Bears trained three times a week, mostly indoors in the winter and on grass in summer. In Michaelmas and Hilary, our main focus was on the BUCS league and cup. We play in the league Midlands 2B, and, despite facing tough opposition, were able to secure some impressive wins. Highlights include strong wins against the University of East Anglia 1st team and the University of Birmingham 2nds, and we eventually finished 5th place. In the cup, we enjoyed a big win in the first round but were unfortunately not able to advance beyond the round of 16.
After a hectic Hilary term, the team was joined by M2, W2, and W3 for a trip to Lisbon in the Easter Vacation, where we trained daily and enjoyed the (mostly) sunny weather. This trip was a huge success and proved to be great preparation for the rest of the year. Come the start of Trinity, our focus was now squarely on our annual varsity match against Cambridge, held at the end of term on the Iffley Road grass courts. In order to prepare, we stepped up our effort in training and competed in several friendly fixtures against local clubs. Final team selection is typically not made until one or two weeks before varsity, and as usual the final 8 spots were once again hotly contested. After a dominant win in last years varsity, we were hoping for a similar story this year. However it was unfortunately not to be, as Cambridge was able to take the victory. All in all, the Men’s Polar Bears squad has had a great year we look forward to building on it come Michaelmas 2016!
