2016-17 Report

The Men's Fifths are one of the teams that were introduced to OULTC in 2014-15. As we are no doubt the biggest of the Men’s teams at Oxford, and due to the fact that we do not participate in BUCS Leagues, M5 spent Michaelmas and Hilary terms knocking off the rust, working on the fundamentals of the game and getting in match practice in preparation for the fixtures to come in Trinity term, in order for a smaller core squad to be selected from the large training squad of the first two terms.

Thanks to the expert guidance of our coach, Max Smeets (University Tennis Coordinator), all of the players that came to our weekend practices and our joint mid-week sessions with M4 saw saw great improvements to their games, which was evident in Trinity term from our two close and highly competitive matches against Oxford M4 and Cambridge’s newly formed M5 at Varsity. Although we were defeated in both matches, the performances were really encouraging and the matches often went down to the wire. Ultimately, four of the six members of the Varsity Squad, (Hugo Shipsey (Corpus Christi), Tom Fairclough (Corpus Christi), Ashe Viswanathan (Keble via the University of Georgia, USA), Ed Grigg (New), Jona de Jong (Balliol) and Jamie Huffer (Trinity)), joined the squad at the beginning of Trinity term, which is a good reminder of the fact that M5 is is always recruiting, even if you miss the Winter trials.

All year round, M5 team training takes place on Sunday mornings on the Hard Courts at Iffley Road, alongside a mid-week afternoon session at Iffley with M4, typically on a Wednesday or a Thursday afternoon depending on court availability. During Trinity term there is also the opportunity for team training to take place on the adjacent grass courts at Iffley Road, dependent on the weather.
